Dr Simon Chen is an expert in conditions affecting the macula and retina. He is at the forefront of leading edge retinal treatments, offering the latest international advances. These include new treatments for age related macular degeneration, diabetic eye problems, retinal vein occlusions and suture-less retinal surgery. Dr Chen uses the latest modern technology. His experience and international training positions him as one of a small number of Australian eye surgeons trained to deal with the full range of routine and complex retinal problems. All treatments are fully customised by Dr Chen to suit the individual needs of his patients.
Born and raised in the UK, Dr Chen graduated in Medicine from the University of London, and trained in eye surgery at the teaching hospitals of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He then completed two extra years of advanced Fellowship training in Retinal Surgery at international centres of excellence including the Oxford Eye Hospital, UK and the Lions Eye Institute, Australia.
Dr Chen held a public hospital teaching position as Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in retinal surgery in Auckland, as well as being an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland. He has been selected to treat many doctors, nurses, optometrists, and their closest relatives who have all trusted his reputation for intricate microsurgery, passion for excellence and ability to communicate well.
Dr Chen has published over fifty medical articles, conducted research into eye injections for retinal disease and participated in international clinical trials. He reviews research papers for leading medical journals and regularly attends and lectures at international conferences.
